United Illuminating announced on Tuesday that it is spending $55 million to build flood walls that will protect electrical substations.
Officials say that the walls will help keep the power on during flooding and enhance the transmission network throughout Fairfield County.
"It's important that the communities are protected," said Avangrid CEO Pedro Azagra.
Officials say the project is the first of its kind in Connecticut and only third in the Northeast region.
