A wake was held for former Hauppauge Fire Chief Stephen Feron on Friday.
The services took place at Moloney's Funeral Home from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. and 7 p.m. to 9 p.m.
As News 12 has reported, Chief Feron passed away suddenly last weekend while taking part in a drill with the Suffolk Urban Search and Rescue Team.
Feron, 49, was a second-generation chief of department who served from 2018 to 2019.
"He grew up around this place as his father served as chief," says Kenneth Furuno, chief of the Hauppauge Fire Department. "As a young child he was in and out of the firehouse endless times during the week and it just grew on him, and when he became old enough, he joined."
During his 33 years as a volunteer, Feron was helpful in forming their technical rescue team.
Furuno said Feron's passion for the team turned him into a valuable community resource
Feron was also a father to two teenagers, a husband and worked full-time in the maritime industry.
The fire chief tells News 12 that fire departments from across Long Island and in other parts of the state will be at Feron's funeral Mass on Saturday at Saint Thomas More Church at 9:30 a.m.
The crowds from the funeral could lead to delays or around Kings Highway.
