A recent wave in car accidents involving pedestrians in the Bronx has many residents concerned over safety.

Advocates say pedestrians need to be alert when crossing the street. That means turning off iPods and putting down cell phones. People are advised not to step out into an intersection if the light is about to change. Experts say if possible, people show make eye contact with a driver when crossing.

The Transportation Alternatives group would like to see more changes in traffic patterns in the Bronx. The group is asking city leaders to reduce traffic volume in the five boroughs by 15 percent over the next three years. Transportation Alternatives say out of about 4,600 pedestrian-vehicle accidents in the Bronx between 2002 and 2004, nearly 60 of those were fatal.
