Waveny LifeCare Network broke ground Wednesday on its new inpatient short-term rehabilitation center in New Canaan.

The new center will expand access to recovery services and will allow Waveny to serve more than 400 additional patients annually and support safer transitions from the hospital to home.

Waveny's president says they are currently operating at more than 90% occupancy and can only accept 20% of hospital referrals.

"So we're building 41,000 square feet of brand new private rooms for those people that need rehab right out of the hospital. We find that we are at capacity all the time. So this is our way of giving back to the community, to really expand so that they have more access to five-star quality care," says Russell Barksdale, CEO of Waveny LifeCare Network.
