Winter snow recap: How much did we get?
The numbers are all in, and the winter of 2020-2021 gave us above-average amounts of snow.
We started things with a big snow in mid-December, but it was a very active February that put us over the top.
Areas further inland across New Jersey and the Hudson Valley finished with more robust totals due to mixing at coastal locations during a few storms.
  • CENTRAL PARK: 38.6 inches
    Average: 30.1 inches
  • LAGUARDIA AIRPORT: 35.2 inches
    Average: 30 inches
  • JFK AIRPORT: 34.5 inches
    Average: 26.2 inches
  • NEWARK-LIBERTY AIRPORT: 45.7 inches
    Average: 32.1 inches
  • ISLIP-MACARTHUR AIRPORT: 33.5 inches
    Average: 32.5 inches
  • BROOKHAVEN NAT'L LAB (NWS): 35.4 inches
    Average: 36.2 inches
  • BRIDGEPORT-SIKORSKY AIRPORT: 43.8 inches
    Average: 35 inches

(Averages shown are based off of our own News 12 calculated data over the last 30 years for each site and may differ slightly from NWS info)
With a spring snow just north of our area last week and another expected this week, some numbers are still climbing!
As far as temperatures, they were at or above average across the tri-state area as well, which goes to show that winters can be both warmer and snowier. This has happened several times in the past decade, and will be interesting to see if this trend continues going forward.
