Yonkers Mayor Mike Spano has announced a plan to open a high school for media and production.
The city’s Board of Education signed off on the plan in partnership with the studio that owns Lionsgate.
The deal comes with a 20-year lease on two former school buildings on Hawthorne Street.
The school is expected to open in 2024. It will enroll approximately 500 students from grades six to 12.
Yonkers Public Schools also plans to partner with Syracuse University's Newhouse School of Public Communications.
The partnership will provide students with the opportunity to take College Link courses and earn an associate degree. This would allow them to either enter the workforce immediately after graduating or continue to earn a bachelor's degree.
The proposal now heads to the state Department of Education for approval.
