The Yonkers community held a vigil in honor of rapper DMX Tuesday evening.
A large crowd of people gathered outside the apartment building where DMX grew up to remember his success and his indelible mark on the city.
The crowd consisted of people who knew him when he was known only as Earl Simmons and watched his rise to fame.
They say he created amazing music they can relate to, dance to or jam out to. They say he was also an inspiration to kids who want to be artists like him.
The group says he will always be remembered for his generosity and for not forgetting his roots.
DMX was known for giving food to people in need, including turkey giveaways and donating tens of thousands of dollars to basketball programs and the Nepperhan Community Center.
There is no word yet about the timing of his funeral or the parade that will be hosted in the city.
