ALERTS:
A cold weather warning is in effect for the weekend for feels-like temperatures as low as -20 to -10 degrees across the state.
A wind advisory is in effect for strong gusts up to 30-50 mph in interior regions of the state.
A wind warning is in effect for very strong gusts up to 40-60mph for coastal counties.
FORECAST:
A fast-moving weather system will bring passing snow showers through the state. There isn't a lot of moisture with this weather maker, so accumulations will be on the very light side. Most of the state should expect half an inch to 1 inch of fresh new snow. The real story is what is behind this Alberta "clipper." Probably the coldest wind chills New Jersey has felt since 2019.
Strong winds will pick up as the snow passes. Winds will consistently be 15-25 mph all day long on Saturday with damaging gusts upwards of 40 and 50 mph. This is the type of wind that can cause damage and power outages. It is also the type of wind that brings dangerous cold - a cold that could have frostbite develop in 30 minutes on exposed skin.
If we are to take the forecast at face value, we haven't had a wind chill this cold since January of 2019. Please be extra careful and more mindful about spending time outdoors.
The winds will remain gusty, and the Arctic air sticks around for Sunday, with the morning possibly feeling the coldest as the core of polar air and gusty winds swing through. Daytime temperatures struggle to get to 20 degrees. This is 20 to 25 degrees colder than what a normal daytime high temperature would be for this time of year.
Temperatures rebound by midweek next week. By rebound, I'm seeing high temperatures just above the freezing mark. Maybe by Valentine's Day, the afternoon high flirts with 40 degrees. I'm sure many of you would love that. See what I did there?
Have a great weekend. Be safe and smart in the cold.
