Dozens plunged into the Southport Harbor for a good cause Wednesday.

The Bobby Kaps Jump for EB raised money for epidermolysis bullosa - E.B. for short - which causes painful blistering all over the body.

Organizers say when they started back in 2000, it was just elementary school dads doing a yearly Polar Plunge as a joke. Five years into the tradition, they say they found their purpose.

Head organizer Tom Lawlor says every freezing-cold jump and every dollar donated gets them closer to a cure.

The Bobby Kaps Jump for EB is named for Robert Kaps, who turned the yearly jump into a fundraiser in 2004. Kapps lost his battle with brain cancer in 2016.

The event raised more than $100,000.
