A man is in the hospital fighting for his life after he wandered onto train tracks and was hit by an oncoming train in Fairfield Friday.

According to police, the Amtrak train struck the 37-year-old man around 7:20 p.m. on the tracks over North Benson. A passenger says the train then came to a screeching halt, even causing another passenger?s drink to spill. Police say shortly after the accident, a Metro-North train spotted the unconscious man on the tracks.

Police are investigating how the man got in the restricted area and why he was there. The accident caused delays for several hours.
