Members of the charitable organization Andrew's Army are planning an event this weekend to raise money in memory of a young Westport man who died of cancer last year.
Andrew Accardi was diagnosed with neuroblastoma, a pediatric cancer, at the age of 5. He graduated from Wesport's Staples High School in 2011, where he was on the golf team, and then later attended Villanova University. Accardi battled cancer for 15 years before losing his battle last October.
At age 13, Accardi founded Andrew's Army, a charitable foundation with the purpose of raising money for cancer research.
Organizers of Andrew's Army say Accardi loved to play golf. The first annual Andrew's Army Miniature Golf Classic will take place this Sunday at Norwalk Cove Mini Golf, a course Accardi and his friends frequently enjoyed.
The event will take place from 4-7 p.m. Organizers say admission is $20 and includes a round of mini golf, food, drinks and a raffle.
Members of the organization are hoping Sunday's event will not only help reach their goal of $1 million for cancer research, but also honor Accardi.
