Today marked the start of the statewide tax-free week, and lots of shoppers headed out to cash in on the savings. Purchases of clothing and shoes that total $300 or less are exempt from state sales tax this week, which means a savings of more than 6 percent. In addition, many stores are offering further discounts to entice shoppers. The savings come just in time for the back-to-school rush, but the discount isn't just for students and parents. Local retailers say tax-free week usually draws big crowds into their stores. Tax-free week runs until stores close next Saturday night.
