The season's first bout of bitter-cold temperatures has arrived in southwestern Connecticut.
Stamford officials say anyone who is without heat in their home or is homeless should head to the city's main warming center, located at the Government Center, to keep warm. Residents can also head to any city-owned fire station.
Fire Capt. David Harriott says the fire station on Main Street has been a warming center for several years. He recalls taking in people who desperately needed it last winter.
Gov. Malloy has activated the state's severe cold weather protocol, and Stamford Mayor David Martin is urging people to take the brutal cold seriously and seek warm shelter.
Officials say being outside in the cold for as few as 10 minutes can lead to frostbite.
