UPDATE 5/22/2018: The charges against Andrew Knight have been dismissed after successful completion of a court approved educational program. The court ordered erasure of any and all records pertaining to the defendant’s arrest.
A teenager from New Canaan charged in an underage drinking party that severely injured another teen did not go before a judge today as scheduled.
Eighteen-year-old Andrew Knight’s arraignment was postponed, and his court hearing has been moved to June 29.
Andrew’s father, Douglas, also had his first court date pushed back from Thursday to June 9.
Both Andrew and Douglas, turned themselves into police earlier this month.
The teen has been charged with delivery of alcohol to a minor and his father with interfering with a 911 call at the party back in March.
Police initially responded to the Knight home on a call someone had fallen and was injured. Police launched a criminal investigation after suspicion the 17-year-old teenager may have been assaulted, but officials say there was no evidence to prove it.
But police say a crime did occur in delaying medical treatment.
Phone records and witness statements show Andrew called his parents, but Douglas ordered him not to call 911.
Even after Andrew’s parents came home, the father still argued against it saying, "I don't want cops in my house."
According to police, the teen had been lying on the floor unconscious for at least a half hour before they were finally called.
"I don't quite understand why poor decisions were made,” says Chief Leon Krolikowski. “But that's exactly why we decided to bring charges."
Police say the injured teen has recovered, but the incident should serve as lesson to other families.
Andrew has been suspended from the high school baseball team and isn't able to play in the state tournament.
