Gov. Phil Murphy has signed a bill that bans realistic toy guns in New Jersey.
The bill seeks to prevent police from mistakenly shooting people carrying toy firearms.
The signing comes following several incidents around the country where police shot teenagers thinking they had real guns, when they only had toys.
Toy manufacturers must now abide by guidelines under the new law (A4260) to continue selling fake guns in New Jersey.
People caught selling toy guns that do not meet the new standards face a fine of $500 for a first offense, and subsequent penalties of $1,000.
