After facing years of problems, the Bridgeport Animal Shelter may finally have a new home. Bridgeport Mayor John Fabrizi and other elected officials toured the proposed site Thursday. The property, located on Evergreen Street, used to be home to greyhound racing kennels. It has been empty since April, when Shoreline Star Racing went out of business. City officials say it would be the perfect place for a new animal shelter. The current shelter on Asylum Street has had a number of problems, including overcrowding and unsanitary conditions. The city had been eyeing a new site in Seaside Park, but the final cost was too expensive. The mayor says the Evergreen Street property, which is owned by a local steel company, is closer to the $2.5 million earmarked for the shelter.
