Many Bridgeport parents say they are devastated after the Board of Education cut $11 million in funding from next year?s school budget. As a result of the cuts, education officials will be eliminating school buses for Bassick and Harding high school students. They will also close both Barnum Annex and Newfield schools. The cuts will also affect staff members throughout the district. The board has eliminated three school days per year without pay for the staff and they have also cut four guidance positions.Although parents are very upset over the decisions, board members say they?re necessary. The cuts took place after Mayor John Fabrizi slashed $13 million from the board?s request. According to Fabrizi, full funding of the budget would have resulted in a large tax increase.
