Rescuers pulled a Bridgeport man out Lake Mohegan in Fairfield Sunday, but he later died in the hospital.

 The incident happened Sunday around 6:47 p.m. 

Geovanny Tapia-Zuniga, 33, of Bridgeport, died after being transported to St. Vincent's Medical Center.

Police say they received multiple 911 calls reporting a swimmer in distress in the swimming area at Lake Mohegan. 

Witnesses say Tapia-Zuniga was swimming near the main beach area when he went under water and never surfaced. People tried to help him before officials arrived, but were unsuccessful.

When crews arrived, divers pulled Tapia-Zuniga from the water at 7:20 p.m., but he was unresponsive.

Tapia-Zuniga was pronounced dead at the hospital, officials say. 

Police say he was swimming in an area where "no swimming" signs are posted. 

A family member of the swimmer was also treated and transported to the hospital, police say.

The Office of the Chief Medical Examiner will determine Tapia-Zuniga's official cause of death. 

Capt. Robert Kalamaras says there is a Jet Ski in the area of the lake in the case of someone drowning. The lifeguards are trained to use it but they were not on duty when the drowning happened since the beach closed at 6 p.m.

This is the third drowning at the lake since 2011.
