A Bridgeport man has remained in custody since his arrest by Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents last Monday at North Washington Avenue near River Street.

Luis Alvarado Rivera has been living and working as a chef in Bridgeport for years. His lawyer, Rashmi Patel, says he is also a single father of an 8-year-old.

Patel says Alvarado Rivera does not have a criminal record.

Sen. Richard Blumenthal says he has contacted ICE to understand why they think someone who's been here for over a decade-with no record-should be deported.

"This kind of arrest rightly makes people apprehensive about going to the doctor's office or going to school, reporting domestic abuse if there is violence in their homes,” says Sen. Blumenthal. “That is bad for the community, as well as individuals to live in a cloud of fear."

Bridgeport Mayor Joe Ganim says the federal government notified the city of the arrest.

The arrest came one day after President Donald Trump said mass deportation raids were set to begin in other states.

Alvarado Rivera is being held at the Suffolk County House of Corrections in Boston.
