A tearful public confession by Bridgeport Mayor John Fabrizi Tuesday detailing his abuse of cocaine and alcohol while in office brought strong reaction from colleagues and constituents.
With his wife at his side, Fabrizi apologized to colleagues and constituents then pledged to do everything he could to restore the public?s trust in his office. The mayor didn?t shy from a careful discussion of his abuse woes, and in coming clean he shed light on the efforts he?s made to stop the abuse by seeking professional help.
Stacey Morgan of Bridgeport says she appreciated the mayor?s tears but would have preferred him to be honest beforehand. On a personal level, she added that she sympathizes with the mayor and his family.
Reaction from colleagues was mixed. Some are calling for Fabrizi to step down, including State Representative Chris Caruso (D) and Fabrizi's mayoral opponent from the last election, Republican Rick Torres, who says he will run for mayor if Fabrizi resigns. At least one colleague, City Council member Robert Curwen (D), pledged to stand behind Fabrizi, saying he?d make sure everyone, including state representatives and senators, move forward.
The mayor claims his drug use never affected his performance as mayor. According to Fabrizi, he quit drinking four months ago and hasn?t used cocaine in more than a year and a half.
