A Bridgeport nurse and her family lost everything in a house fire several weeks ago, and after it was looted learned her insurance did not cover the stolen possessions.
Kathy Wheeler, who has been a nurse at Bridgeport Hospital for 16 years, raised five children and took care of three grandchildren in the house. Fortunately, everybody in the house at the time made it out alive.
She is described by co-workers as a woman who always offers help and seldom asks for it. Wheeler often takes a leadership role at her job, mentoring new nurses. She?s also very active and well-known in the community. According to friends, her home frequently served as a refuge for inner city children.
Wheeler?s family and friends are reaching out, donating items, and accepting items on her behalf.
