Bridgeport rescue mission offers additional space during frigid cold
The Bridgeport Rescue Mission is expecting a higher volume of people looking to escape the bitter cold.
The staff says 14 makeshift beds were used inside the chapel at the men's shelter Monday night. That's in addition to their two dozen beds already in use. Workers say they also have extra mats and blankets for anyone else in need of a place to stay.
The shelter provides three meals a day and showers to those staying there.
The women and children's shelter is also in an overflow mode.
Officials say the Bridgeport Rescue Mission is in need of coats, hats, scarves and gloves for men, women and children.
They are also in need of blankets and canned foods.
Donations can be brought to their donation center at 1069 Connecticut Ave. in Bridgeport.
News 12 meteorologists say the cold is going to stick around for several days.
Those looking for shelter from the cold are asked to call 211
