Nearly a year after the closure of the blighted Bronx Terminal Market, some retailers are thriving in new locations while others are floundering.

The city sold the site near Yankee Stadium in 2004 to a developer, who is building a 1-million-square-foot shopping center. Merchants, many of them African, were later forced to relocate and hope customers would follow.

"We did advertising in African papers, put fliers in African markets and we used some of the radio stations," Gold Coast Trading Manager Kwasi Adjei said of his move to Canal Place. Adjei said the store's efforts have paid off because business is good, despite paying higher rent and having less foot traffic.

Around the corner, workers at Nasem's African Market say their business has struggled since the market closed. They hope shoppers will again find their way to the store.
