Some cheerleaders at Staples High School in Westport say they are disappointed a longstanding tradition of baking for the football team during the season was terminated.

Students say an article in the school paper stirred up controversy about the cheerleading tradition, claiming it was antiquated and sexist that the girls had to bake for the boys. The cheerleaders say they were never required to participate and enjoyed the activity and showing support for the team.

The Staples High School principal says he thought the practice had actually ended years ago. Some of the cheerleaders' parents say they hope the girls can continue to bake if they want to.
