Mayor Joe Ganim today announced the beginning of demolition at the former Remington Arms factory.
Ganim says four buildings on Helen Street near Barnum Avenue will be demolished.
The factory was built in 1867. It was used to manufacture munitions during both world wars. It became Remington Arms' headquarters in the 1900s. All production halted at the facility around 35 years ago.
Numerous parts of the since-abandoned factory have already been torn down. There's been plans to restore the iconic Remington Arms shot tower, among other proposed projects, in recent years.
The plant has been the site of criminal activity over the years. News 12 has reported on multiple fires believed to have been intentionally set. Police say they recovered a body on the property connected to a missing person's case in 2019.
