Clinic owner arrested in $5 million Medicaid fraud scheme
Federal authorities raided a clinic on Southern Boulevard Monday, and state prosecutors say its owner was arrested in connection with a scheme that stole more than $5 million from Medicaid.
In a statement, state Attorney General Eric Schneiderman accused 52-year-old Joseph Wright, who owns the Assistance By Improv II clinic at 953 Southern Blvd., of luring thousands of low-income residents to his practice with the promise of affordable housing.
Prosecutors then accuse Wright of arranging for the residents to have unnecessary medical tests, for which he allegedly filed false claims for reimbursement from the state's Medicaid program. He allegedly told the victims that if they gave him their medical information, they might qualify for affordable housing.
Prosecutors also say that none of the residents ever received housing.
Wright faces a slew of charges, including at least three felonies.
