The Westport community is rallying behind a local mother who was seriously injured and left paralyzed during last week's nor'easter.
Victoria Gouletas says she was inside her home during the storm when the wet, heavy snow caused a tree to fall outside of her house.
Gouletas, a real estate attorney with First American Title who is on the Westport Board of Appeals, went to check it out. That's when she says another tree snapped and pinned her face-down in the snow, leaving her paralyzed from the chest down.
Emergency response crews faced a tough time getting to the scene, with many roads blocked due to trees and power lines.
A GoFundMe campaign has already raised more than $100,000 to help Gouletas, her husband Troy Burk and their three young children.
Doctors say Gouletas will never walk again, but friends say she is extremely positive and a fighter.
"It sounds crazy but she has the most incredible positive outlook," says Westport Selectman Melissa Kane, a friend of Gouletas’. "She is in rehab now, hospitalized in rehab, and she wants to beat the odds."
Community members have started a meal train and the town's Human Services Department is also contributing.
Gouletas is now at Mount Sinai Hospital in New York City and is expected to stay for at least a month.
