As summer approaches, boaters are preparing themselves for a season of high gas prices.
Richard Kiss, dock master at Captain's Cove Marina, says many are opting to forego the open waters. Gas at the marina has jumped to $4.98.
"They're becoming 'dock knockers' ? They don't go out at all, they just kind of hang out on their boats," says Kiss.
Boaters, like Huntington resident Richard Scofield, are paying an arm and a leg just to leave the dock.
"I'm not happy," he says. "I figure now with the price almost $5 a gallon, just to start the engine is $250."
Kiss recommends mariners lighten the load on their boats in order to use less gas. He also suggests finding closer destinations for boat trips to make every drop of fuel count.
