Controversy surrounds Greenwich Library appearance
A controversial presentation that was canceled due to complaints about the content and then rescheduled due to First Amendment concerns went off without a hitch at the Greenwich Library Thursday.
A presentation by Alison Weir entitled "Israel-Palestine: Beyond the Headlines" went on as scheduled with a larger audience than initially planned. Weir's presentation had to be moved to an auditorium to accommodate an audience of more than 350 people.
Library officials say they were spurred to originally cancel the appearance based on the quantity of complaints they had received.
"Libraries are about free information and open access, but we received so many complaints on this particular program that the Board of Trustees and library management decided to cancel the program," says the library's executive director, Mario Gonzalez.
Gonzalez says he received free speech complaints from people across the country outraged over the cancellation. The presentation was rescheduled Wednesday based on legal advice.
A second presentation is scheduled for Saturday at the library.
