Part of downtown Stamford remained shut down Tuesday night as crews worked around the clock to stabilize a crane high above the Royal Bank of Scotland building.

It's still unclear exactly what went wrong with the crane, which was found unstable around 5:30 Monday night. The crane?s arm was sloping beyond a 90-degree angle and some slack wires were seen at the crane's mid-joint.

Turner Construction, the company in charge of the project, and the crane?s manufacturer, from Wisconsin, are both on site. Crews are using two other cranes to help secure the machine in order to take it apart.

Authorities say they are making progress on securing the crane. However, they say the project will likely not be completed by Wednesday morning?s rush hour. Part of Washington Avenue, Clinton Avenue and Divison Street remain closed.

Meanwhile, the nearby UBS building was evacuated and authorities ordered residents who live in the area to get out. Approximately 50 residents plan to spend another night at a hotel. The Red Cross has been helping the displaced residents with necessities. Turner Construction arranged for the hotel rooms.
