The Connecticut State Health Department confirmed Tuesday two new cases of a lesser-known tick-borne illness.
Two people, one from Fairfield County and one from New Haven County, tested positive for the Powassan virus, or POWV.
The health Department says both patients are between 50 and 79 years old and became sick in April.
Both patients are now recovering at home.
While most people infected with POWV likely experience mild, flu-like symptoms or no symptoms at all, officials say some people will develop severe illness that affects the central nervous system.
