The Planned Parenthood Center in Bridgeport is one of hundreds of facilities around the country that handed out free emergency contraception throughout the day Wednesday.Free EC Day allows anyone to get the emergency contraceptive Plan B for free at any Planned Parenthood. Plan B has been at the center of controversy since it was approved for over-the-counter sales by the FDA in August. Anti-abortion supporters like Bill O'Brien, president of the Connecticut Right-to-Life Corporation have led fights against its approval. However, Susan Yolen of Planned Parenthood says Plan B gives women a second chance if a condom breaks, if they have been raped, or if they had unprotected sex.Yolen says that along with the giveaway, Planned Parenthood wants to make it clear that Plan B does not protect against sexually transmitted diseases. They encourage everyone having sex to use condoms and other types of birth control to protect against disease.
