CT residents, Iraq immigrants reflect on execution of Saddam Hussein
Although a group of Iraqi immigrants now live in southwestern Connecticut, they say the news of Saddam Hussein?s execution hits close to home.Azad Kareemn and his family are Kurds, a group Hussein was known for prosecuting. Kareemn grew up in northern Iraq. His younger brother, Nowzad was taken by Iraqi intelligence forces in 1982. Kareemn says it was nine years before his family knew for sure that Nowzad was executed.There are numbers of Kurds living and working in Bridgeport's West End. Kuvan Essu says Hussein?s persecution of Kurds in Iraq forced him and his family to spend months living in the mountains in fear. Another southwestern Connecticut resident says he could hear the celebration in the background when he spoke on the phone with his family in northern Iraq.Hussein was convicted for the killings of 148 people in northern Iraq in 1982. He's been accused of killing hundreds of thousands more. All of the Iraqi immigrants that now call southwestern Connecticut ?home,? told News 12 Connecticut they believe Hussein got what he deserved.
