DA urged to drop case against man accused of killing wife's attacker
Members of one Bronx community are calling on the district attorney to drop the case against a man accused of killing his wife's would-be rapist.
Mamadou Diallo stood in front of a packed courtroom Monday, filled with supporters from his Guinea community.
The court appearance was one of several Diallo has attended since his arrest for allegedly killing Earl Nash, who police say had a lengthy criminal rap sheet. Supporters of Diallo are calling for his case to be dropped.
Police say Diallo beat Nash to death with a tire iron after Nash assaulted Diallo's wife in the couple's Washington Avenue apartment.
Diallo's lawyer says his client has been under tremendous stress and has not been able to work since his June arrest.
The 61-year-old was initially charged with manslaughter. The charges were reduced to assault. Diallo also faces criminal possession of a weapon and harassment charges.
He is due back in court on Aug. 8.
