Police in Bridgeport have identified the driver involved in the accident that left one woman dead and sent four other people to the hospital.
Chief AJ Perez says Marie Tufaro, 41, struck Shylane Crooks, a 50-year-old Bridgeport woman who was crossing the street around 11:30 a.m. on Huntington Turnpike, near the intersection of Priscilla Street.
Tufaro's BMW spun out and also hit an SUV with three people inside. Police say Crooks died at the hospital.
Jefri Abidin, the manager of a gas station at the scene of the crash, says he heard a loud bang outside.
"They were in shock," he recalls of the SUV passengers. "I just held their hands and pulled them out from the car, because the car was all leaking gas, and damaged and everything."
Tufaro, of Trumbull, is in stable condition at Bridgeport Hospital. Police have obtained a warrant for her blood and the black box in her car, but Perez says he will wait for the investigation to complete before commenting on possible charges. The black box can tell detectives how fast Tufaro was driving before the crash.
The three people hurt in the SUV were Brenda Cruz and Lisette Andino, who remain hospitalized, and Andre Cruz, who has been discharged.
