A Fairfield landmark will soon close its doors.

After more than six decades working at Barber Serville, 83-year-old Joe Vaccarella is retiring.

"I started cutting hair and that's it, I liked it," Vaccarella says.

Vaccarella says he's being forced out because of the upcoming renovations to the Fairfield Community Theater.

A publicist for Kleban Properties says current tenants of the property were offered space in a different commercial property owned by Kleban. Some have chosen to go to the other locations, but Vaccarella decided to close up shop.

Sacred Heart University announced at the end of May it's teaming up with Kleban Properties on a 10-year lease to renovate the theater in an effort to give students opportunity to grow through performing arts.

Kleban Properties was unable to comment on camera but in a written statement to News 12 Connecticut said, "The presence of a university has a direct effect on a city or town's retail foot traffic, lifestyle amenities, job creation, tourism dollars and real estate."

The Sacred Heart University Community Theater is expected to open next spring.

Vaccarella says he was approached about moving two months ago. He says he's going to close his business this September.
