A child from Fairfield County has come down with the fourth reported case of the measles in Connecticut, the Department of Public Health confirmed Friday.

The public health investigation of the case determined that the child was not infectious while at school but contracted measles in early October.

The latest case of measles is not related to three previously confirmed cases in Connecticut reported in January and April, according to the DPH.

Senate Majority Leader Bob Duff of Norwalk released a statement in response to the news.

"News of the fourth outbreak this year is very troubling. My thoughts are with the child and the family from Fairfield County, right in our own backyard, during this difficult time. The health of our residents is at stake from a completely preventable disease. It is imperative we remove non-medical exemptions to increase vaccination rates statewide."

According to the DPH, 1,249 individual cases of measles have been confirmed in 31 states from Jan. 1 to Oct. 1, 2019. This is the largest number of cases reported in the U.S. since measles was eliminated in 2000.
