A Fairfield woman says she found signs of toxic waste that the town then tried to cover up.
Dana Kery says she was walking her dog along the sidewalk in October 2013 at Gould Manor Park when she found glass and asbestos.
"There was no possible way that the crew that put the material down didn’t see that it was there," says Kery.
News 12 reported last month that environmental tests along the sidewalks of Gould Manor Park show levels of arsenic, lead and asbestos. The town says the fill was taken from a site at a Fairfield Public Works facility. It forced the town to close off some areas of parks and school fields.
Kery says she sent emails in January 2014 notifying the town of what she saw in 2013 and that she can't understand why nothing was done sooner.
The town says contaminants are not high enough to pose a health hazard. Kery disagrees, calling it “gross mismanagement.”
"As a Mom, I'm appalled…it’s really unacceptable behavior by our officials that this happened," she says.
Kery says there is a board meeting Wednesday night where people in town – including the Facebook group “Fairfield Fights Toxic Waste” – are once again expected to voice their concerns.
News 12 reported that two town employees were arrested – Scott Bartlett, the town's superintendent of public works, and Joe Michelangelo, the public works director.
