A new monument for fallen Navy SEAL Lt. Michael P. Murphy was installed Thursday at Memorial Park in Lake Ronkonkoma.
Daniel and Maureen Murphy helped unveil the granite monument to their son, a Patchogue native and posthumous Medal of Honor recipient.
The original memorial dedicated to Murphy was broken into pieces by a vandal last July. The new one is an exact replica but is three times thicker than the previous one. Those who made it say it's virtually indestructible.
Officials say the new plaque will be protected by security cameras, enhanced lighting and public safety protocols.
Murphy was killed by enemy fighters in Afghanistan in 2005 while trying to save his team. His story was the basis of the movie "Lone Survivor."
Shortly after the original memorial was destroyed, Suffolk police arrested a 14-year-old boy in connection with the vandalism. Officials tell News 12 the teen was given an important lesson about Murphy's bravery and sacrifice.
