Families of murder victims angry over state cuts for funeral aid
Families in Bridgeport say they are angry over recent state budget cuts affecting funding for the funerals of some murder victims.
April Barron, whose son was murdered in 2011, is urging Bridgeport families to buy life insurance for their kids as a result of the changes.
Barron says she was surprised to learn the state Office of Victim Services no longer assists families in paying for funerals if the victim was engaging in criminal activity at the time of their death.
Barron has organized a meeting next month with several life insurance companies so local families can learn about their options. She says five insurance companies will meet with families March 9 at 999 Broad St. in Bridgeport.
