A fire at a Fairfield marina Sunday destroyed two boats and damaged four others before it could be contained.

The fire happened Sunday night on the G Dock at the South Benson Marina on Turney Road in Fairfield. Officials say the fire ignited on one boat, then spread to the others. By the time firefighters arrived, two boats were on fire.

The fire marshal says a man working on the boat plugged in an extension cord and accumulated gasoline vapors were ignited by an electric spark.

All but one of the fire-damaged boats were removed from the marina and taken to their owners' homes.
