Investigators are looking into a house fire in Trumbull that tore through a Chatham Drive home Tuesday afternoon.
A charred, gutted shell remained standing Wednesday, with boards over some of the gaping holes in the structure.
Authorities say the fire began in the first-floor kitchen and spread upstairs. They say neighbors saw smoke billowing out of the home and called 911.
"Honestly I saw one stream of smoke and so we got really nervous and we called 911 and by the time they got here it was a giant fire," says neighbor Chase Diamond.
Authorities say the home was fully engulfed when firefighters arrived, but luckily no one was home.
A 92-year-old man who built the house in 1968 and still lives there was not home at the time. He was in the hospital for an unrelated injury.
His son, who also lives there, was not home either. But he said he was cooking before he left and now blames himself.
The fire marshal says the investigation is ongoing and the cause of the fire remains undetermined.
