Frost heaving on a number of Fairfield roads is causing a headache for many drivers.

The Department of Public Works says it has responded to three times the normal amount of calls regarding frost heaves this year.

Frost heaves are cracks in the road that are caused by freezing temperatures. Officials say the cracks can cause roads to buckle and become uneven. The cracks may also lead to pesky potholes when water from melting snow or rain creeps in.

Residents and business owners in the area surrounding Black Rock Turnpike say they expect to find cracks and potholes during and after the winter, but this year has been worse than previous ones.

DPW officials ask anyone who spots the cracks to call them immediately.
