Good Samaritans are being credited with saving a man's life after a crash in Westport.

The crash happened Wednesday morning on Post Road East. Eyewitnesses say the male driver appeared to lose control, possibly in the middle of a medical emergency. They say the car struck a tree and flipped over, trapping the man while fire and smoke built up in the car.

Denise Toth, of Trumbull, says she saw the crash and called 911.

"I didn't know whether he would live or die," Toth says. "I've never seen or experienced anything like that in my life."

Paul Szegedy, a mechanic at nearby Vautrin's Auto Service, says he put out the fire with an extinguisher and that he and co-worker Scott Luciani, with the help of another man, finally got the driver safely out of the car.

Luciani, an EMT, says the driver had a bad head injury and was going into epileptic shock. Westport police say the driver was taken to Norwalk Hospital with injuries not considered life-threatening.
