Republican candidates vying to be Connecticut's next governor took part in a debate Tuesday at Sacred Heart University in Fairfield.

The debate was hosted by WSHU Radio and Hearst Media.

Immediately brought up was the controversial topic of highway tolls, just one day before Gov. Dannel Malloy is set to ask the state to borrow $10 million to study the idea.

Mark Boughton, who has the Republican Party's endorsement, says the state has already studied tolls -- which is partly true. But the new study would go further, including recommending exactly how much tolls would cost and where the toll readers would go. The state Bond Commission will decide whether to go forward with the study. On Tuesday, the state treasurer, who's a Democrat, said she can't vote for it. Three others have already said they're voting no.

Steve Obsitnik questioned why it costs so much to build roads in Connecticut, saying it's three time more expensive compared to the rest of the country.

Also at the debate, the two businessmen -- Bob Stefanowski and David Stemerman -- went at each other over their businesses. They also took heat from Tim Herbst for formerly being Democrats.

The primary election will be held Aug. 14.
