In light of the tragic Valentine's Day shooting at Northern Illinois University, Gov. M. Jodi Rell will hold a statewide conference on school safety at Fairfield University in March.
A similar conference was held following last year's mass shooting at Virginia Tech. The focus of this year's summit will be mental health and how to spot at-risk individuals who could pose a threat to themselves or others.
"This next summit is an opportunity for us all to regroup and get together and talk about what happened and what we've learned since it happened," says Fairfield police Capt. Gary McNamara.
One action already taken to help spot potential problems was the establishment of a case management team at Fairfield University. The team consists of public safety officers, educators and school counselors who meet once a week to dissect incidents that may have occurred throughout the week and recommend counseling to suspicious individuals.
