Greenwich residents plea for more police patrols
Crime victims in one Greenwich neighborhood say their pleas of help to public officials have gone unanswered.
Residents of South Water Street in Byram have reported slashed tires to more than two dozen cars in the past two weeks. The tire slashings are only the latest crimes in the neighborhood, according to residents. They say vandalism, break-ins and burglaries have plagued the area over the past six months.
Police Chief David Ridberg says the crimes are under investigation, but the department simply does not have the man-power to increase patrols of the area.
"I don't have anybody to put down there," said Ridberg. "I'd love to be able to, but I've got seven guys assigned to traffic on the avenue because the town says that's the most important function for them to be doing. It's a bad use of police resources to spend a lot of money to train these people, and they end up being traffic lights."
