Groton police have halted their search for two kayakers missing off the coast of the town.

Coast Guard officials say Spencer Mugford and Sophia McKenna were last seen on a white tandem kayak Sunday morning.

Groton authorities began searching for the two later that day when they didn't return from their trip.

The Coast Guard helped with the search, dispatching a helicopter and rescue boat.

Officials say their empty kayak was later found.

The groups spent 71 hours searching, spanning 2,000 square miles to locate the missing people.
