A group of businesses united to help a woman whose Stratford home was damaged in a scam by an alleged fraudulent contractor.
Venus Rogers, 57, is a full-time caregiver to her daughter Amber, who is quadriplegic and on home life support. Last year, she hired Stamford-based contractor Danny Gainer to fix extensive water damage in her home.
Stratford police say he stole over $50,000 from Rogers after taking her deposit, doing demolition work, then disappearing and leaving her home in shambles.
“It was a really dark time for me,” said Rogers. "I lost all trust.”
Police issued an arrest warrant for Gainer for operating without a license, but he has yet to be arrested.
After seeing her story on News 12 Connecticut, electrician John Small and attorney Ian Gottlieb decided to help organize an effort to repair her home for free.
"To leave somebody in a condition with their home ripped apart like this is unbelievable,” said Small.
Small and Gottlieb are also founders of the Tradesmen’s Collective, a company that aims to help stop fraud in the building industry.
"You want the contractor to be accountable to the homeowner and the homeowner to be accountable to the contractor,” said Gottlieb.
Workers from Trident Electric, Sunlight Electric, Gold Coast Property Maintenance and Safeside Chimney went to Rogers’s home Sunday morning to repair the damages.
Rogers says she is grateful that they made her home livable again.
"Thank you so much, from the bottom of my heart,” she said. "I am so grateful that there are good people in this world."
