The month of May is Haitian Heritage Month, and a local group is kicking of the celebration in Bridgeport.
The Haitian Heritage Committee of Connecticut invited members of the community to Metric Bar & Grill Tuesday night.
Throughout the month, several activities are set to take place, with May 18 being a reminder of the birth of the Haitian flag.
Pasacale Millien, president of the Haitian Women Association, said the group wants to make sure that their children know where they came from.
"That they understand our past, our struggle and our success, and that they can take our torch and carry on,” said Millien.  “Because we want them to know what the culture is all about and why Haitians are so proud to be Haitians."
Organizers said a flag raising and festival will be held in the coming weeks.
